Republican Party presidential nominee and television personality Donald Trump said last Monday, August 15 that he plans to impose a new system of “extreme vetting” and “ideological screening” for immigrants. When it comes to other nationalities planning to immigrate to the United States, he noted “We should only admit into this country those who share our values and respect our people. The time is overdue to develop a new screening test for the threats we face today. Our country has enough problems.”
United States immigration officials already conduct vetting on potential immigrants to the country and consent to background checks. Visa applicants must answer questions regarding terrorist activity and whether they have participated in or plan to participate in terrorist attacks. There is also a question that covers whether they have participated in activity that includes “limiting or denying any person’s ability to exercise religious beliefs”.
