Protests held to advocate for protection of immigrant rights

Immigrant rights advocates scheduled demonstrations all around the country last weekend, January 14 and 15. The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles spokesman Jorge-Mario Cabrera said of the protests, “This is our first salvo to what may be a long, drawn out campaign.”

The demonstrations are the latest movement in the advocacy that has progressed since 2006 when over one million people protested a Republican-backed immigration bill that would have made it possible to criminally prosecute people in the country illegally. Rallies last weekend culminated at a church in Washington, at a teachers’ union hall in Chicago, and in Los Angeles and San Jose.

Demonstrations were sparked by President-elect Donald Trump’s campaign rhetoric that he would implement tougher immigration policies and penalties. However, some people are hesitant to join the rallies without the action Trump is referencing. University of California, Berkeley professor of ethnic studies Chris Zepeda-Millan said, “Right now, all we have is these vague kinds of promises. Attacks have to occur for people to mobilize.”

Immigrant workers may be subject to e-verification

Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick plans to make Senate Bill 23 into a law in the upcoming legislative session. The bill was filed by Texas State Senator Charles Schwertner and seeks to require state contractors to use a federal electronic verification system to ensure the immigrants they are hiring have legally immigrated to the United States.

If the bill gets approved, it will codify an executive order regarding e-verify issued by former Texas Governor Rick Perry in 2014. Ana Gonzalez, a member of the Workers Defense Project, said the measure seeks to negatively impact both undocumented workers and businesses because half the state’s construction industry workforce comes from immigrant workers.

Travis County sheriff raises concerns over likely successor’s immigration policy

In an onstage interview at the Texas Tribune Festival on Saturday, September 24, Travis County Sheriff Greg Hamilton raised concerns about the feasibility and soundness of the campaign promises made by fellow Democrat Sally Hernandez, a constable deemed most likely to win Hamilton’s position come November.

Hamilton was featured along with Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez on the panel discussion titled “Immigration and the Cities” at the Texas Tribune Festival. Hernandez, who is running against her Republican counterpart, Joe Martinez, favors making Austin a “sanctuary city” for illegal immigrants and believes you can’t “solve the criminal justice process by deporting them.”

According to the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the majority of local law enforcement agencies limiting cooperation with the federal government when it comes to handling local immigrants are in California.

858 immigrants erroneously granted citizenship

The United States government erroneously granted citizenship to 858 immigrants from countries that are currently being monitored amid concerns that they may pose a threat to national security. Some of the immigrants are from countries that have high incidences of immigration fraud, an internal Department of Homeland Security audit released last Monday, September 19, showed.

Inspector General John Roth’s auditors said the individuals came from “special interest countries,” but he did not release the immigrants’ individual names. The report also did not mention which countries were involved.

Fingerprint scans for as many as 315,000 immigrants, who either have final deportation orders or are criminal  fugitives, are missing from federal databases. Apparently, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement has yet to review around 148,000 of said immigrants’ files to add their fingerprints to the digital record.

Trump plans to craft outline of specific immigration plans

Businessman and Republican Party presidential nominee, Donald Trump, announced in a Twitter post last Sunday, August 28 that he will give a detailed immigration plan on Wednesday, August 31 in Arizona.

Trump and the Democratic nominee, Hillary Clinton, traded barbs last week, with Trump calling Clinton a “bigot” and Clinton accusing Trump of enabling hate groups to flourish in the Republican party. During the last week of August, Clinton will focus her attention on mental health, spreading the message that there is a need for it to be incorporated into the United States health care system. Meanwhile, it is expected that Trump will continue talking about approaches to immigration issues, which will be spearheaded by his running mate, former Governor of Indiana Mike Pence.

Trump wants ‘extreme vetting’ of potential United States immigrants

Republican Party presidential nominee and television personality Donald Trump said last Monday, August 15 that he plans to impose a new system of “extreme vetting” and “ideological screening” for immigrants. When it comes to other nationalities planning to immigrate to the United States, he noted “We should only admit into this country those who share our values and respect our people. The time is overdue to develop a new screening test for the threats we face today. Our country has enough problems.”

United States immigration officials already conduct vetting on potential immigrants to the country and consent to background checks. Visa applicants must answer questions regarding terrorist activity and whether they have participated in or plan to participate in terrorist attacks. There is also a question that covers whether they have participated in activity that includes “limiting or denying any person’s ability to exercise religious beliefs”.

Coming to a new country can result in a wide array of difficult challenges, one of which is the rejection of your immigration application. Obama expands in-country refugee processing

President Obama’s administration is making efforts to enable children and parents of Central American families to immigrate to the United States as refugees.

White House Deputy Homeland Security Adviser Amy Pope said last Tuesday, July 26 that the Obama administration is planning the expansion of in-country refugee processing for families coming from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. The government is also expanding an almost two-year-old program to enable Central American children to reunite with their parents who are already living with documentation in the United States.

Since the start of the budget year in October 2015, over 51,100 individuals traveling as families and over 43,000 children with no companions were caught illegally crossing the Mexican border. The number of immigrants has risen this year after significant dips between the 2014 and 2015 budget years.

Employers respond to Supreme Court’s immigration gridlock

Undocumented immigrants are not the only ones saddened by the United States Supreme Court’s deadlock on President Obama’s immigration reforms; many employers are also not happy.

Migration Policy Institute director of research for U.S. programs Randy Capps said these employers are composed of two groups. First, the “relatively small group” of employers of highly skilled workers who could have hired any skilled Deferred Action for Parents of Americans (DAPA) and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) beneficiaries. DACA and DAPA recipients cannot at the moment work legally in the country.

Second, the “broader class” of employers who hire less skilled, undocumented workers. For instance, Capps said, the meat and poultry processing industry is employing fewer undocumented workers than they used to. Now the industry “must cast a wider net” to to find workers.

Barack Obama leaves behind bleak outlook for national immigration policy

United States President Barack Obama said his policies on immigration reform would somehow prevail, but that voters would have to decide on their continuity with the next president that they are going to elect.

When Obama vacates The White House in January 2017, immigration reform will serve as his most evident misstep in his 7 and 1 ½-year effort in trying to bring about social change, only enacting temporary changes on the immigration system and leaving behind no proper channels with which to make the 11 million undocumented immigrants in the country tread their way towards a path to citizenship.

Obama will be seen as the president who protected 730,000 young people, who were brought to the U.S. illegally, from immediate deportation. Allies will remember that he asserted the use of executive power that even though was brought down by the courts and political opposition, would pave the way for the next president to make a legal precedent.

Many people all over the world are looking to the United States to travel, move in, and start their new lives. Supreme Court rules on Obama’s immigration executive action

With a 4-4 deadlock, the United States Supreme Court upheld the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals’ decision against President Barack Obama’s executive action last Thursday, June 23. The action in question aimed to delay the deportation of undocumented immigrants.

Obama’s executive order would have shielded around 4 million illegal immigrants – largely the parents of children considered American citizens – from deportation. The action also sought to give immigrants the right to apply for work authorization and the ability to participate in the Social Security system.

U.S. District Court Judge Andrew Hanen accepted the state of Texas’ argument that Obama’s immigration order could cause harm to the state by mandating it to give driver’s licenses to additional undocumented immigrants. The Obama administration argued that Texas voluntarily gives out driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants, and the state could decide not to give out licenses if it wanted to. Even so, the executive order was blocked, a ruling the Supreme Court upheld.
