Austin, Texas-based nonprofit organization Workers Defense Project has held a demonstration that called for immigration reform by conducting a 35-mile protest march from the T. Don Hutto Residential Center in Williamson County, an area which houses asylum-seeking immigrants, to the Governor’s Mansion in downtown Austin.
Texas Governor Gregory Abbott has been staunchly opposed to immigration reform during his time in office, as evidenced by his filing a lawsuit in December of last year that sought to halt an executive action by President Barack Obama that would delay the deportation of around 5 million illegal immigrants. The Fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals agreed with a Texas judge’s injunction of Obama’s initiatives in a ruling issued in November of this year.
