Democrat senators crafted a bill that seeks to cut by $1 billion President Barack Obama’s request for emergency funds for the support of Central American children crossing the United States border alone, the Associated Press reported on July 22.
Senate appropriations committee chairwoman Barbara Mikulski, a Democrat representative of Maryland, was scheduled to file the proposed legislation on July 23. The measure, which slices Obama’s $3.7-billion funding request to $2.7 billion, will include appropriation for the $225-million Israel Iron Dome missile defense system that will be created to intercept short-range rockets and mortars, and $615 million to address wildfires.
The proposal will be met with Republican demands to alter the 2008 policies allowing each refugee child to stand before an immigration judge, so their exit from the U.S. will be expedited.

President Barack Obama’s administration requested a $2-billion budget from Congress to deal with the wave of children illegally crossing the Mexican border to escape poverty and violence in Central America, the Associated Press reported on June 23.
Investigation revealed that children who illegally immigrate to the United States can often reside in the country for a long time, attending public schools and getting jobs without being deported. This is because of the backlog in courts of immigration cases and the extensive time a deportation case can take. Because of this extended process, perceptions have been created abroad that children can stay in U.S. for a long time or that Congress is going to relax immigration laws, which is unlikely to happen.

After taking a more lenient stance on immigration matters two years ago, the Texas Republican Party has returned to a hard-line policy against softening immigration standards.
Candidate for Texas lieutenant governor Dan Patrick said “we must not step back from being bold,” a commitment he and other party members swore on at their recent party convention that concluded last Saturday, June 7.
On the other hand, Democratic Party members, who have not won a state-wide post in Texas in over 20 years, say this reluctance on the part of Republicans to favor a softer stance on immigration issues will greatly benefit Democrats, largely because of the state’s growing Hispanic population.
