Jeb Bush outlines immigration plans

Ahead of the first scheduled Republican primary debates, former Governor of Florida and a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, John Ellis “Jeb” Bush, outlined his immigration plan should he be elected as President of the United States.

The plan has six points and is mostly based on ideas he enumerated in his 2013 book entitled Immigration Wars, which he co-wrote with Phoenix, Arizona-based Goldwater Institute Vice President for litigation, Clint Bolick.

Part of his plan recommends taking away federal funds from sanctuary cities like Austin, Texas in order to bolster enforcement of the country’s immigration laws. However, an article in the Austin American Statesman discussing this immigration plan highlighted the confusion that can surround the term “sanctuary city,” highlighting that for some, the term applies to cities that don’t enforce ICE requested detainers, whereas for others, the term is simply applied to cities where law enforcement officers do not inquire as to a person’s immigration status when stopped or detained.
