Asians projected to become largest immigrant group in the U.S.

In a new immigration study conducted by the Pew Research Center on Monday, Sept. 28, Asians will become the largest group of immigrants to head to the United States, surging past Hispanics, due to a major shift in immigration patterns within the next 50 years.

The study focuses on events happening by 2065, but notes that major changes will come around the year 2055.

Currently, immigrants comprise 14% of the total U.S. population, increasing from 5% in 1965.

By 2055, Asians are expected to become the largest immigrant group at 36%, while Hispanics are at 34%. White immigrants, who were listed at 80% back in 1965, will be listed at between 18% and 20% while black immigrants will be within the 8% to 9% range.

Fewer child immigrants attempting to cross the U.S-Mexico border

The Department of Homeland Security reported last Wednesday, September 3 that the number of children attempting to illegally cross into the United States from the U.S.-Mexico border is steadily declining.

In August, the Border Patrol took 3,129 children into custody, those of which were mostly from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. In July the number was at 5,400, while in June it reached over 10,600.

This wide increase triggered the administration to beef up efforts against human smuggling groups and urgently seek out cooperation from parents in Central America to not send their children to treks to the country via Mexico. The Obama administration declined to comment on why these numbers are declining so significantly, saying different factors could have caused it.

However, one contributing factor could stem from how last month, Mexican officials began pulling Central Americans off of a freight train, dubbed “La Bestia” (The Beast), notorious for taking thousands of migrants toward the U.S. border.
