Democrat senators crafted a bill that seeks to cut by $1 billion President Barack Obama’s request for emergency funds for the support of Central American children crossing the United States border alone, the Associated Press reported on July 22.
Senate appropriations committee chairwoman Barbara Mikulski, a Democrat representative of Maryland, was scheduled to file the proposed legislation on July 23. The measure, which slices Obama’s $3.7-billion funding request to $2.7 billion, will include appropriation for the $225-million Israel Iron Dome missile defense system that will be created to intercept short-range rockets and mortars, and $615 million to address wildfires.
The proposal will be met with Republican demands to alter the 2008 policies allowing each refugee child to stand before an immigration judge, so their exit from the U.S. will be expedited.

The Republicans, which make up most of the House of Representatives, have a different agenda for the start of 2015. They have their own set of policies on foreign relations, the environment, and one of the hottest topics in legislation recently, immigration.
Obama’s recent immigration action is one of the key issues that many predict Republican legislators will begin attempting to dissemble.

United States President Barrack Obama accused critics and opponents of his national comprehensive immigration reform measure as people who are not thinking about the “human consequences” of deporting certain immigrants, the News & Advance reported.
On February 4th at the Oval Office, Obama met with six young immigrants who are in danger of being deported back to their countries should the initiative passed by the Republican-led House of Representatives get approval in both houses of Congress. Obama said he feels for the human casualties that might be affected by this move.
Should the proposed legislation come to pass, it would overturn Obama’s executive decision to minimize deportations and allow some illegal immigrants to work in the United States. Obama, however, would likely veto the legislation.

Protestors marched together in Austin on February 21 from Texas’ State Capitol to the Governor’s Mansion to express their displeasure over an injunction that was ordered against President Barack Obama’s new national comprehensive immigration reform measure, KXAN reported.
Austin Mayor Steve Adler declared his full support for the protestors – many of whom were immigrants themselves – and along with them urged Governor Greg Abbott to join them in their cause, saying, “if we take people out of the shadows, then we’re going to be stronger as a community.”
Other Texas leaders, however, have differing opinions. For instance, Round Rock Representative John Rice Carter said the judge was right to stop Obama’s order, claiming the president overreached his powers.
A federal district court in Texas issued an injunction against Obama’s executive action; the executive action effectively delayed the deportation certain illegal immigrants in the country.

Former Maryland Governor and Democratic presidential candidate Martin Joseph O’Malley stated that he would limit deportation of illegal immigrants in an attempt to keep families together. O’Malley criticized the country’s immigration process at an event in Manhattan, calling it a “broken system.” If elected, he said he would work with Congress to create a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants. Additionally, he would create an independent agency intended to streamline and fine-tune the immigration process.

Although Texas is one of the most vocal among the states objecting to President Obama’s executive measure to delay the deportation of some undocumented immigrants in the United States, not all of the state’s leaders agree with former state attorney general, now Governor, Greg Abbott’s lawsuit. In fact, two officials, Austin Mayor Steve Adler and Travis County Judge Sarah Eckhardt, have spoken out against the state’s attempts to fight the President’s plan.
Twenty-six states, including Texas, filed a lawsuit last December to block the Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents program, also called DAPA, a measure which would allow certain immigrants who have lived in the U.S. since 2010 and are parents of legal citizens to be exempt from deportation for a temporary period.
In a rally held on Saturday, October 13, Adler urged Texas Governor Gregory Wayne Abbott to meet with immigrant families in the community so that he could understand their plight.

An appeals court dealt a major blow to President Barack Obama’s executive action to delay deportation of more than 4 million undocumented immigrants a year after it was issued, effectively upholding a preliminary injunction which was filed by 25 states and was granted in February to block implementation of the measure.
In its decision, released last Tuesday, November 10, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, led by Circuit Judge Jerry Smith, held that the President’s initiative, called the Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA), “affects the states’ ‘quasi-sovereign’ interests by imposing substantial pressure on them to change their laws, which provide for issuing drivers’ licenses to some aliens and subsidizing those licenses.”

Texas Governor Gregory Abbott has been staunchly opposed to immigration reform during his time in office, as evidenced by his filing a lawsuit in December of last year that sought to halt an executive action by President Barack Obama that would delay the deportation of around 5 million illegal immigrants. The Fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals agreed with a Texas judge’s injunction of Obama’s initiatives in a ruling issued in November of this year.
The WDP advocated hope Gov. Abbott will recognize their cause as they seek to inform him that nearly 70 percent of Texans support immigration reform. Since the increase in arrivals of Central American migrants in 2014, many of them seeking asylum have been rejected because of a lack of legal representation, or because these individuals have missed a court date. Immigration judges have ruled that such migrants are candidates for deportation. There have been reports that United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers (who are in charge of immigration raids under the Department of Homeland Security) have active plans to take migrants from their homes.
Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles executive director Angelica Salas recently said in a statement: “In their haste to return the migrants home, the U.S. government has failed to ensure Central American migrants have proper representation in court, and as a result, many have been wrongly denied asylum and/or deported in absentia.”
